Just A Fever??? Nope Swine...

I along with many people have been alert to the swine flu(H1N1). Having a child with underlying medical conditions, I wanted to make sure I was prepared to jump on the illness quickly had it occurred...

Currently we are doing an enzyme study, and are in the final five days, which is probably the most important phase of the study. So getting sick at this point in the process is extremely frustrating, since the 30 plus day study is coming to an end. Never the less on day two of our final five days illness strikes.....

Late at night Lane acquired a high 103 plus fever. After running the fever all night, I took him to the doctor the next morning.... They didn't seem to think the flu would be the culprit, they were leaning more towards a sinus infection, although my gut was leaning towards the flu... Really I had no reason to think he had the flu, his only symptom was a fever, but us mommies just feel things sometimes and we just know, but I stayed silent so they wouldn't think I was crazy...... Lane's PA is great with him, and is very thorough, so they ran some x-rays, did a swab, and were fixing to run a CBC... As I was pleading with (bribing) Lane to let them take some blood the nurse came back and said no need it is the Flu.... Lane did have the regular flu shot a month ago and would have had the H1N1 this next week (too late)... Anyways, Lane was ecstatic not to get a poke, and the nurse was surprised... He said, upon us arriving he didn't think testing was necessary since he ONLY had a fever... Which yes I agree... A fever could be 1000 different things... Lane had no other complaints... So glad we did test though, cause you never know.... So we got our instructions and on we went.... Oh lungs were also clear whoot....

I am personally very grateful that we acted fast and was able to start the Tamiflu with in 12 hours of any symptoms... Which is why I am sharing this.... Obviously only a fever can be present in the beginning and if you are in question, go anyway because you never know, and it could make a huge difference...... Lane is doing very well so far, ran a really mean fever for 24 hours some stomach pain, no appetite and really rapid breathing, and now it seems to be at bay (which from what I read also happens, then it comes back, we will see )... So I am counting on the tamiflu to really help minimize the illness.... Another huge advantage to early detection is that the rest of our family has been able to start treatment as well.... Two of us now have some painful stomachs but other than that starting we are fine....

So when in doubt go anyway.... It is not worth waiting.... Here is an article..
